Hyaluronic acid filler treatment for the face

Why We Prefer Hyaluronic Acid Fillers for Facial Treatments

Facial fillers have been used in aesthetic medicine for many years. Over time, a wide range of materials have been introduced, beginning with collagen-based products and later including temporary, semi-permanent and permanent fillers.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, we do not evaluate a filler only by how it looks immediately after treatment. For us, equally important considerations include tissue compatibility, predictability, long-term behaviour and the ability to reverse the treatment if necessary.

For these reasons, hyaluronic acid fillers remain our preferred option for most routine facial filler treatments.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that occurs naturally in the human body. It is an important component of the extracellular matrix, particularly within the dermis of the skin, where it contributes to hydration and tissue volume through its ability to bind water.

Because hyaluronic acid is naturally present in human tissues, it has characteristics that make it particularly suitable for aesthetic applications.

However, an important point should be emphasised:

Not all hyaluronic acid fillers are the same.

Differences in purification, cross-linking technology, gel structure, elasticity, manufacturing standards and product consistency can significantly influence how a filler behaves within the tissues.

For this reason, we prefer to work with established hyaluronic acid filler products whose characteristics and tissue behaviour we know well from long-term clinical experience.

Were Hyaluronic Acid Fillers Always This Predictable?

No.

Earlier generations of hyaluronic acid fillers were associated more frequently with palpable irregularities, small nodules or persistent deposits beneath the skin.

As manufacturing techniques, purification processes and gel technologies improved, these problems became considerably less common with newer-generation products.

However, improved product quality is not the only reason we prefer hyaluronic acid fillers.

The Main Advantage: Reversibility

One of the most important principles in aesthetic medicine is maintaining control over the treatment.

Even with careful assessment and precise injection, a filler result may occasionally differ from what was intended. Too much volume may have been created, an asymmetry may become apparent, or the filler may become visible or palpable in an undesirable area.

Hyaluronic acid has a major advantage in these situations:

It can be broken down with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

This allows the amount of filler to be reduced or, when necessary, much of the injected product to be dissolved.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, we consider this reversibility an important safety advantage. Aesthetic treatment is not only about creating a good result, but also about having options available if that result needs to be adjusted.

What About Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers?

Calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA, fillers have also become increasingly popular and can produce excellent results in appropriately selected patients.

They may be particularly useful when structural support, contour definition or tissue stimulation is desired.

However, there is an important distinction between CaHA and hyaluronic acid fillers.

We do not currently have an equivalent of hyaluronidase that can rapidly and predictably dissolve an injected CaHA filler.

Therefore, if an unwanted effect occurs, the options for reversing the treatment are more limited.

This does not mean that CaHA fillers are ineffective or inappropriate. They can be very useful products. However, particularly in facial areas where even small changes in volume can influence facial expression and proportion, the reversibility of hyaluronic acid remains an important consideration in our treatment planning.

The Longest-Lasting Filler Is Not Necessarily the Best Filler

Patients often ask:

“Which filler lasts the longest?”

But longevity alone does not determine whether a filler is the right choice.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, we also consider:

  • How the material behaves within the tissues
  • Whether the result looks natural
  • How predictable the filler is over time
  • Whether the treatment can be adjusted if necessary
  • Whether the product is appropriate for the specific anatomical area

For these reasons, hyaluronic acid remains our preferred material for many facial filler treatments.

Its value is not simply that it can produce natural-looking volume and contour. Its greatest advantage is the degree of control it allows us to retain throughout the treatment process.

In aesthetic medicine, sometimes the most valuable property of a treatment is not how permanent it is, but how safely and predictably it can be managed.
