Chin Implant and Chin Augmentation in Istanbul

A chin implant can improve facial balance by increasing the projection and definition of the chin. In patients with a small or retruded chin, the nose may appear relatively more prominent and the lower face may look less defined.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, chin augmentation is planned according to the patient’s facial proportions, jaw structure and the amount of projection required. The aim is not simply to make the chin larger, but to create a more balanced relationship between the nose, lips, chin and jawline.

What Is a Chin Implant?

A chin implant is a biocompatible implant placed over the front of the lower jaw to improve chin projection and contour.

It may be considered in patients who have:

  • a small or retruded chin,
  • weak chin projection,
  • poor definition between the chin and neck,
  • imbalance between the nose and chin,
  • or a lower face that appears underdeveloped.

The size and shape of the implant are selected according to the patient’s anatomy and the desired level of support.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

Not every patient with a retruded chin is suitable for a chin implant.

The first question is whether the problem is limited to the chin itself or involves the entire lower jaw. If there is a significant skeletal jaw discrepancy or bite problem, orthognathic surgery may be more appropriate.

Chin implants are generally better suited to patients with normal dental occlusion whose main concern is insufficient chin projection.

Chin Implant or Genioplasty?

Chin augmentation can be performed with either a chin implant or genioplasty.

With a chin implant, the jaw bone is not cut. Instead, an implant is placed over the front of the mandible to increase projection.

In genioplasty, the chin bone itself is cut and repositioned.

Genioplasty may be more suitable when:

  • greater advancement is required,
  • vertical chin height needs adjustment,
  • significant asymmetry is present,
  • or the deformity cannot be corrected adequately with an implant alone.

A chin implant is often a simpler option when the main goal is to improve projection.

Medpor Chin Implants

For many years, we have used Medpor implants for chin augmentation.

Medpor is a porous polyethylene material. Its porous structure allows surrounding tissue to grow into the surface of the implant, which can contribute to long-term stability.

This can be an advantage, but it also means that if the implant needs to be removed in the future, removal may require more extensive dissection.

Silicone Chin Implants

We have also increasingly used silicone chin implants.

Silicone implants have a smoother surface and are generally easier to insert, reposition or remove if necessary. One reason they are often preferred is that they can usually be removed or exchanged more easily if a problem develops or if the patient wishes to change the implant later.

No implant material is ideal for every patient. The choice depends on anatomy, desired projection and long-term considerations.

Medpor or Silicone: Which Is Better?

There is no single answer for every patient.

Medpor implants provide strong tissue integration and stability.
Silicone implants are smoother and are generally easier to remove or replace if required.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, implant selection is based on:

  • chin anatomy,
  • required projection,
  • soft tissue thickness,
  • implant size,
  • and the possibility of future revision.

Can Implants Be Used for the Jaw Angles?

Yes.

Facial implants are not limited to the chin. In selected patients, implants can also be placed over the mandibular angles, which are the back corners of the lower jaw.

Chin implants mainly improve forward projection, while jaw angle implants can create a stronger and more defined lower facial contour.

They may be considered in patients with:

  • poorly defined jaw angles,
  • a narrow lower face,
  • weak mandibular contours,
  • or a desire for a stronger jawline.

In some cases, chin and jaw angle implants can be planned together to improve the overall proportions of the lower face.

How Is Chin Implant Surgery Performed?

The implant is placed into a carefully prepared pocket over the chin bone.

Important aspects of the procedure include:

  • accurate positioning,
  • symmetry,
  • stability,
  • and selecting an implant that follows the natural contour of the mandible.

The procedure may be performed through an incision inside the mouth or through a small incision beneath the chin, depending on the implant type and the surgical plan.

Recovery After Chin Implant Surgery

Swelling and tightness around the chin are expected during the early recovery period. Some patients may notice temporary discomfort when speaking, smiling or chewing.

Most swelling gradually decreases over the first few weeks, although the final contour appears more natural as the soft tissues settle over time.

Recovery varies depending on the individual patient and the extent of surgery.

Can a Chin Implant Be Removed?

Yes.

Chin implants can be removed if necessary. The ease of removal depends partly on the implant material.

Silicone implants generally develop less tissue integration and are therefore easier to remove or exchange. Medpor implants may require more detailed dissection because soft tissue can grow into the porous surface.

This is one of the factors we consider when selecting the implant.

Risks of Chin Implant Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, chin implant surgery has potential risks.

These may include:

  • infection,
  • bleeding,
  • implant displacement,
  • asymmetry,
  • visibility or palpability of implant edges,
  • changes in sensation,
  • contour irregularities,
  • or the need for implant removal or replacement.

Careful planning, appropriate implant selection and postoperative follow-up are important in reducing avoidable risks.

The final price depends on the implant type, the extent of surgery and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time.

International patient packages may include:

  • surgeon’s fee,
  • hospital and operating theatre costs,
  • general anaesthesia,
  • preoperative tests,
  • medications,
  • hotel accommodation,

  • hotel-hospital-clinic transfers,
  • and postoperative follow-up.

A detailed quotation is provided after a preliminary assessment so that the included services are clear before travel.

Chin Implant Surgery for International Patients

Patients travelling from the UK or other countries can begin the process with an online preliminary assessment.

Clear facial photographs and relevant medical information are reviewed before travel. Once a surgical plan is established, our team can coordinate:

  • airport transfers,
  • accommodation,
  • hospital arrangements,
  • clinic visits,
  • and postoperative follow-up during your stay in Istanbul.

Conclusion

Chin augmentation can improve facial balance in appropriately selected patients with insufficient chin projection. However, not every retruded chin should be treated with an implant.

The relationship between the chin, jaw, teeth, nose and overall facial proportions should be assessed together.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, both Medpor and silicone chin implants are used according to the patient’s anatomy and long-term needs. In selected cases, jaw angle implants may also be considered when broader lower-face definition is required.

For international patients considering chin augmentation in Istanbul, an online preliminary assessment can help determine whether a chin implant or another surgical option is more appropriate.
