HIFU Treatment in Istanbul for Non-Surgical Face Tightening

What Is HIFU and How Does It Tighten the Face?

As we age, collagen and elastin production gradually decreases and the tissues supporting the face begin to lose firmness. This may lead to reduced facial definition, softening of the jawline and mild laxity of the face and neck.

These early changes do not always require surgery.

HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) is a non-surgical skin tightening treatment that delivers focused ultrasound energy to specific tissue depths beneath the skin. The aim is to stimulate collagen remodelling and gradually improve skin firmness without incisions or stitches.

HIFU is most suitable for carefully selected patients with mild to moderate skin laxity who would like to improve facial definition without undergoing surgery.

What Is HIFU and How Does It Work?

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to create controlled thermal points at predetermined depths beneath the skin while leaving the skin surface intact.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, treatment is performed using 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm transducers to target different anatomical levels.

  • The 3.0 mm transducer is used for deeper dermal and collagen-rich connective tissues.
  • The 4.5 mm transducer is used to target the deeper supportive tissues at the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) level.

The focused energy creates controlled thermal stimulation within the target tissue. This may cause existing collagen fibres to contract and stimulate new collagen formation over the following weeks and months.

The purpose of HIFU is not to change facial features. It is to support the patient’s natural facial contours by improving early skin laxity.

Although the SMAS is also an anatomical layer addressed during facelift surgery, HIFU does not reposition loose facial tissues in the way a surgical facelift does.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, treatment planning therefore focuses on delivering appropriate energy to the correct anatomical depth rather than simply using the highest possible settings. Skin thickness, facial anatomy, degree of laxity and the patient’s expectations are considered together.

Areas That Can Be Treated with HIFU

HIFU is most commonly used on the face and neck.

Lower Face and Jawline

Loss of definition along the jawline is one of the early signs of facial aging. HIFU may help improve skin firmness and create a more defined lower facial contour in suitable patients.

Under the Chin

Mild skin laxity beneath the chin may respond to HIFU.

However, if fullness in this area is mainly caused by excess fat rather than loose skin, another treatment may be more appropriate.

Neck

HIFU may be used to improve mild skin laxity of the neck and support a firmer contour.

Brow Area

In selected patients, treatment around the brow may provide a subtle tightening effect. The goal is a refreshed appearance rather than a dramatic change in eyebrow position.

Cheeks

HIFU may help when mild skin laxity is the main concern.

If the primary problem is volume loss, treatments such as fat grafting or hyaluronic acid fillers may provide greater benefit.

Who Is a Good Candidate for HIFU?

The best candidates generally have relatively good skin quality with early or moderate loss of firmness.

HIFU may be considered for patients who notice:

  • reduced jawline definition,
  • mild laxity of the lower face,
  • early neck laxity,
  • subtle loss of facial contour,
  • and who prefer a non-surgical treatment with minimal downtime.

However, HIFU is not suitable for every patient.

Significant skin excess, advanced facial sagging or marked descent of deeper tissues cannot usually be corrected adequately with HIFU alone.

Likewise, when facial aging is primarily related to volume loss, fat grafting or dermal fillers may be more appropriate.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, we therefore begin by identifying the main cause of facial aging. Every face ages differently, and treatment is selected according to anatomy rather than age or treatment popularity alone.

How Is HIFU Treatment Performed?

HIFU is performed in a clinical setting and does not require general anaesthesia.

Before treatment, the face is assessed to determine the degree and distribution of skin laxity. Treatment areas, energy settings and the number of treatment lines are then planned individually.

The skin is cleansed and ultrasound gel is applied. Focused ultrasound energy is delivered systematically to the planned areas using the appropriate transducer.

Some patients experience brief tingling, pinching or warmth in the deeper tissues during treatment. These sensations are usually temporary.

Approximate treatment times are:

  • Face: 30-45 minutes
  • Face and neck: 45-60 minutes

Most patients can return to normal daily activities immediately after treatment.

Recovery After HIFU

HIFU generally requires little or no downtime because no incision or resurfacing of the skin is involved.

Temporary effects may include:

  • mild redness,
  • tenderness,
  • slight swelling,
  • or a feeling of tightness.

These usually settle within a short period.

During the first day, irritating skin treatments should be avoided. Regular moisturisation and sun protection are also recommended.

Most patients return to work and social activities on the same day.

When Will I See the Results?

HIFU results develop gradually because they depend on the body’s collagen remodelling response.

Some patients notice mild tightening shortly after treatment, but the more meaningful changes develop over time.

In general:

  • early changes may become noticeable within several weeks,
  • results are often more visible after 2-3 months,
  • collagen remodelling may continue for several months.

The duration of the result varies according to age, skin quality, lifestyle, sun exposure, smoking and the natural aging process.

Many patients require only one treatment initially. In suitable patients, HIFU may be repeated approximately every two years, while selected patients may benefit from annual maintenance treatment depending on their skin quality and degree of laxity.

Benefits of HIFU Treatment

For appropriately selected patients, HIFU offers several practical advantages:

  • no surgical incision or stitches,
  • no general anaesthesia,
  • outpatient treatment,
  • minimal downtime,
  • gradual collagen remodelling,
  • and improvement in mild laxity of the jawline, lower face and neck.

However, HIFU should not be regarded as a treatment for every form of facial aging. The quality of the result depends greatly on correct patient selection and realistic expectations.

Why Do HIFU Results Vary Between Patients?

Online reviews of HIFU can differ considerably because the same treatment is often being used in patients with very different facial aging patterns.

Patients with mild to moderate skin laxity and reasonable skin quality are generally better candidates.

Patients with advanced sagging may benefit more from surgery, while those with significant volume loss may require fat grafting or fillers.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, the decision to recommend HIFU is therefore based on a clinical assessment of skin quality, facial anatomy and the underlying cause of aging rather than on online reviews or a standard treatment protocol.

HIFU vs Surgical Facelift

HIFU and facelift surgery are fundamentally different treatments.

HIFUSurgical Facelift
Non-surgical treatmentSurgical procedure
Stimulates collagen remodellingRepositions loose skin and deeper tissues
Minimal downtimeLonger recovery
Gradual improvementMore substantial structural correction
Suitable for mild to moderate laxitySuitable for advanced sagging

A surgical facelift physically repositions loose tissues. HIFU cannot reproduce this effect. HIFU may help postpone surgery in selected patients, but it should not be considered a substitute for facelift surgery when significant skin laxity or structural descent is present.

At Anka Plastic Surgery, treatment selection is based on the degree of aging, skin quality, facial anatomy and the patient’s expectations rather than simply choosing between a “surgical” and “non-surgical” option.

How We Plan HIFU Treatment at Anka Plastic Surgery

HIFU outcomes depend on more than the device itself.

Our treatment planning considers:

  • facial anatomy,
  • skin thickness and quality,
  • degree of laxity,
  • appropriate treatment depth,
  • energy settings,
  • and treatment distribution.

We use a focused ultrasound platform with 3.0 mm and 4.5 mm transducers, allowing different anatomical levels to be treated according to the patient’s needs.

Rather than applying the same protocol to every patient, treatment is individually planned according to the pattern of facial aging.

For us, the key elements of HIFU treatment are appropriate patient selection, anatomical understanding and controlled energy delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do patients say about HIFU treatment?

Patient experiences vary because not every patient has the same type or degree of facial aging. HIFU is generally better suited to patients with mild to moderate skin laxity than to those with advanced sagging.

How much does HIFU cost?

The cost of HIFU treatment varies depending on the treatment area and whether the face alone or the face and neck are treated. Prices start from €1,000, with the final cost determined according to the individual treatment plan.

Does the HIFU device matter?

Yes. Device technology is important, but patient selection, anatomical assessment, treatment depth and energy settings are also important factors.

Is HIFU safe?

HIFU is generally well tolerated when appropriately indicated and correctly performed. Temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or tightness can occur after treatment.

Why are some patients disappointed with HIFU?

One common reason is inappropriate patient selection. Significant skin excess, advanced sagging or marked volume loss may require a different treatment.

Is HIFU painful?

Some patients experience temporary tingling, pinching or warmth during treatment. The intensity varies between individuals.

How many HIFU sessions will I need?

Many patients are initially treated with a single session. Further treatment can be considered according to skin quality, aging pattern and response.

How long do HIFU results last?

The duration varies according to age, skin quality, lifestyle and the natural aging process. In suitable patients, HIFU may be repeated approximately every two years. Selected patients may benefit from annual maintenance treatment.

Can HIFU be combined with wrinkle treatments or dermal fillers?

Yes. Depending on the patient’s needs, HIFU may be combined with wrinkle treatments, hyaluronic acid fillers, fat grafting or other facial rejuvenation procedures. The sequence and timing should be planned individually.

When can I return to normal activities?

Most patients return to work and normal daily activities on the same day.
