Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) in Turkey
Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Prominent ears are a congenital anatomical variation that may have a significant psychosocial impact, particularly during childhood and adolescence. The most common underlying causes include:
• Underdevelopment of the antihelical fold
• An increased conchal–mastoid angle causing forward projection of the ear
This condition does not affect hearing and is purely aesthetic.
Otoplasty aims to correct the anatomical imbalance and restore a natural, harmonious ear position.
About the Surgeon
Otoplasty at Anka is performed by Assoc. Prof. Anı Çinpolat, MD, an EBOPRAS-certified plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon based in Istanbul, Turkey.
With advanced reconstructive training and a structured surgical approach, her focus is on achieving natural ear contour while preserving anatomical integrity. Each procedure is individually planned according to cartilage structure, skin quality, and patient age.
When Can Otoplasty Be Performed?
Ear development is largely complete by the age of 5.
For children experiencing social discomfort, surgery can be safely performed during the preschool years.
Adults may also undergo otoplasty at any age if they wish to correct prominent ear appearance.
How Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?
The procedure may be carried out under local or general anesthesia depending on the patient’s age and preference.
An incision is made behind the ear, ensuring that scars remain discreet and well concealed.
During surgery:
• Cartilage is reshaped
• Suturing techniques are used to recreate the antihelical fold
• The ear is repositioned closer to the head
The goal is a balanced and natural ear contour rather than an over-corrected appearance.
Postoperative Period
Following surgery:
• A protective headband is typically worn for 1–3 weeks
• Mild swelling and tenderness may occur
• Most patients can resume daily activities within a few days
Children usually return to school within a short period.
Risks and Long-Term Results
Otoplasty is a safe procedure with high patient satisfaction.
Rare complications may include:
• Infection
• Hematoma
• Partial loss of correction due to suture loosening
Hearing ability is not affected.
When performed with appropriate technique and postoperative care, results are permanent and natural-looking.
