Prominent Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)
Prominent ears are a congenital condition that can have a significant psychosocial impact, particularly during childhood and adolescence. The most common causes include:
• Insufficient development of the antihelical fold
• An increased angle between the ear and the head, causing the ear to protrude forward
This condition does not affect hearing and is purely a visual deformity. The goal of prominent ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is to correct the underlying anatomical issue and achieve a more natural and harmonious ear appearance.
When Can the Surgery Be Performed?
The ideal time for prominent ear surgery is after the age of 5, once ear development is largely complete.
To prevent social and psychological difficulties, the procedure can be safely performed during the preschool period.
How Is Prominent Ear Surgery Performed?
The procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s age and preference. Surgery is carried out through an incision made behind the ear, ensuring that the scar remains well hidden.
The ear cartilage is reshaped and repositioned using special suturing techniques to create a natural ear fold and reduce the ear’s projection from the head.
Postoperative Period
After surgery:
• Patients are advised to wear an ear bandage or headband for 1–3 weeks
(such as a sports headband or scarf)
• Most patients can return to daily activities and routine work or school during this period
Mild swelling and tenderness may occur initially and usually resolve quickly.
Possible Risks and Outcomes
Prominent ear surgery is generally a safe procedure with high patient satisfaction. Rare but possible complications include:
• Infection
• Hematoma (collection of blood at the surgical site)
• Loosening of sutures leading to partial shape changes
There is no expected change in hearing ability following the procedure.
When performed with appropriate technique and postoperative care, otoplasty provides permanent, natural-looking, and highly satisfying results for both children and adults.
