Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed for patients who experience loose skin, sagging, and weakness of the abdominal muscles. It is particularly suitable for individuals who have difficulty achieving a flat abdomen despite diet and exercise, most commonly after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck include: • Women after pregnancy with abdominal muscle separation • Patients who have lost a large amount of weight and developed excess abdominal skin • Individuals with skin laxity and stretch marks in the abdominal area
In patients with significant excess fat, weight loss is recommended first, followed by surgical tightening of the remaining loose skin if needed.
How Is the Surgery Performed?
Abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made along the lower abdominal fold, extending between the two hip bones. An additional incision is created around the navel.
The excess skin and fat below the belly button are removed. The weakened abdominal muscles are reinforced by tightening the surrounding fascia with sutures. The upper abdominal skin is then repositioned downward, creating a flatter and firmer abdominal contour.
After surgery: • Drains are placed to prevent fluid accumulation and are usually removed within 1–2 days • The typical hospital stay is 1–2 days
Recovery Process
During the recovery period: • A compression garment is recommended for approximately 6 weeks • Patients are advised to walk slightly bent forward during the first few weeks • Most patients can return to daily activities and work within about 2 weeks
Surgical scars may appear pink and slightly raised in the first few months but gradually fade and become less noticeable over time.
Long-Term Results and Important Considerations
A tummy tuck is a procedure with high patient satisfaction and long-lasting results, provided there are no significant weight fluctuations after surgery.
For patients planning future pregnancies, it is recommended to postpone the surgery until after childbirth to maintain the longevity of the results. Performing a tummy tuck at the time of delivery is not appropriate and is strongly discouraged.
