Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Breast Reduction)
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue, resulting in a female-like breast appearance. It may be caused by hormonal imbalances, certain medications, liver diseases, excessive alcohol consumption, or obesity. In some cases, gynecomastia can be congenital. If an underlying cause is identified, it is treated first, followed by surgical correction if necessary.
Gynecomastia surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or sedation, depending on the patient and the surgical plan. According to the type of gynecomastia, the procedure may involve liposuction alone, excision of glandular breast tissue alone, or a combination of both techniques.
When liposuction is performed, small incisions of approximately 5 mm are made at the sides of the breasts. If removal of glandular tissue is required, the breast tissue is excised through incisions placed along the edge of the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple). Since the incisions are concealed within the areolar border, surgical scars are usually minimal and barely noticeable. In cases of severe breast enlargement, additional incisions may be necessary.
After surgery, patients are advised to wear a tight compression garment or athletic vest for 4–6 weeks. Strenuous physical activities and heavy sports should be avoided for approximately 6 weeks to ensure proper healing.
