Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
With aging, the eyebrows and upper and lower eyelids may develop skin laxity, sagging, wrinkles, and prominent fat pads. These changes can create a tired, sad, or aged appearance. In some cases, excessive drooping of the upper eyelids may even impair the visual field and cause functional problems.
All of these deformities can be effectively corrected with blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). During the procedure, excess skin and herniated fat tissue are removed, and additional supportive techniques may be performed when necessary.
In upper eyelid surgery, the incision is placed within the natural crease of the eyelid, allowing scars to remain well concealed and barely noticeable. This procedure is most commonly performed under local anesthesia. Excess sagging skin is removed, and herniated fat pads, typically located in the medial (inner) area of the upper eyelid, are excised when indicated.
For lower eyelid surgery, the incision can be made just below the eyelashes, or alternatively, through the inner surface of the eyelid (transconjunctival approach) in younger patients who have isolated fat herniation without skin laxity. When needed, fat tissue harvested from the abdominal area may be injected to support and rejuvenate the lower eyelid region. Lower eyelid surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia.
Patients are typically discharged on the same day as the surgery. During the recovery period, protection from sun exposure is important. Over time, surgical scars fade and become barely visible, resulting in a natural and refreshed appearance.
