Fat Grafting (Autologous Fat Transfer)
With aging, loss of facial volume becomes more noticeable. Changes such as:
• Hollowing of the cheeks
• Deepening of the nasolabial folds
• Sunken appearance around the eyes
• Loss of fullness in the cheekbones
can cause the face to appear tired and aged.
To restore lost facial volume, dermal fillers may be used; however, fat grafting offers a natural and effective alternative.
What Is Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting is a procedure in which fat tissue is harvested from the patient’s own body using liposuction, processed, and then reinjected into areas where volume restoration is needed. Since the tissue is taken from the patient, this is known as an autologous procedure.
Common donor areas include:
• Abdomen
• Waist
• Hips
Advantages of Fat Grafting
Using the patient’s own fat tissue offers several important advantages:
• No foreign material is introduced into the body
• The risk of allergic reaction is extremely low
• Natural stem cells present in fat tissue can be utilized
Due to the stem cell content of fat tissue, fat grafting not only restores volume but may also improve:
• Skin vitality
• Freshness
• Overall skin brightness
Compared to synthetic fillers, fat grafting has the added benefit of enhancing skin quality.
When indicated, the fat tissue can be further refined using specialized techniques to enrich the stem cell content and injected separately. This approach may increase both the survival of the transferred fat and the overall regenerative effect on the skin.
Longevity and Number of Sessions
After fat grafting, a portion of the injected fat may be naturally reabsorbed by the body over time. Therefore:
• If volume loss occurs 6 months to 1 year after the procedure
• And the remaining fullness is insufficient
the procedure can be repeated. To achieve stable and long-lasting results, 2–3 sessions may be required in many patients.
Procedure and Recovery
During the procedure:
• The donor area is numbed with local anesthesia
• Fat is harvested using a cannula
• The collected fat is processed and prepared for injection
• The prepared fat is carefully injected into the target areas
Swelling in the treated areas typically decreases significantly within 3 days. Patients are usually discharged on the same day and may return to daily activities shortly thereafter, depending on the extent of the procedure.
