Teardrop vs Round Implants in Breast Augmentation
Silicone breast implants are generally divided into two main shapes: teardrop (anatomical) and round implants. But which option provides a more natural and long-term reliable breast shape?
Teardrop implants are designed with a flatter upper portion and more volume in the lower pole, mimicking the natural contour of the breast. For this reason, they were developed with the idea of achieving a more natural appearance.
Round implants, on the other hand, have a uniform shape, with silicone evenly distributed throughout the implant.
However, there is an important point to consider: when standing upright, gravity causes the silicone gel inside round implants to settle slightly downward. As a result, round implants can also take on a natural teardrop-like shape in daily life. With proper placement, round implants can create very natural-looking results.
One of the main disadvantages of teardrop implants is the risk of implant rotation. Some degree of movement within the breast pocket is normal for all implants. However, if a teardrop implant rotates, it can lead to noticeable breast asymmetry. With round implants, rotation does not affect the breast shape and therefore does not cause visible deformity.
Based on my surgical experience over the years, I prefer round silicone implants in breast augmentation procedures. When combined with appropriate implant selection, accurate pocket creation, and proper surgical technique, round implants provide natural results while offering greater long-term safety and predictability.
