Breast Reconstruction in Turkey
Breast Reconstruction
Mastectomy, the surgical removal of breast tissue, is performed by general surgeons due to breast cancer or other medical conditions.
Following mastectomy, many patients are candidates for breast reconstruction, which can be performed either:
• At the same time as mastectomy (immediate reconstruction)
• At a later stage (delayed reconstruction)
Breast reconstruction planning requires close collaboration between the general surgeon, oncologist, and plastic surgeon to ensure oncologic safety and optimal aesthetic outcome.
About the Surgeon
Breast reconstruction at Anka is performed by Assoc. Prof. Anı Çinpolat, MD, an EBOPRAS-certified plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon based in Istanbul, Turkey.
With advanced training in reconstructive microsurgery and participation in complex transplant procedures, her approach focuses on restoring form, symmetry, and patient confidence while maintaining oncologic safety. Each treatment plan is individually designed based on cancer stage, tissue quality, and patient preference.
Main Reconstruction Methods
There are two principal methods of breast reconstruction:
1. Autologous Tissue Reconstruction (Flap Surgery)
This method uses the patient’s own tissue, typically harvested from areas such as:
• Abdomen
• Back
Autologous reconstruction often provides a softer and more natural feel.
However, it involves:
• Longer operative time
• More complex surgery
• A longer recovery period
2. Implant-Based Reconstruction
This method uses breast implants to recreate breast shape.
Modern implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel.
Advantages include:
• Shorter surgical time
• No donor site
• Faster initial recovery
However, implants may require long-term monitoring and, in some cases, future replacement.
If the remaining skin after mastectomy is insufficient, a tissue expander may be placed temporarily. This balloon-like device is gradually filled over several weeks to stretch the skin before permanent implant placement.
Hospital Stay and Recovery
Hospitalization typically lasts 3–4 days, depending on the technique used.
Recovery time varies:
• Approximately 1 week for simpler implant-based procedures
• Up to 3 weeks or more for flap-based reconstruction
Additional Procedures
Breast reconstruction is often completed in stages.
Additional procedures may include:
• Nipple–areola reconstruction
• Symmetry surgery of the opposite breast
The aim is to achieve natural balance and restore body image.
Important Perspective
Breast reconstruction is not only an aesthetic procedure.
It is a reconstructive surgery aimed at restoring physical integrity and psychological well-being after cancer treatment.
